Changing Pencil Lines to Black in Manga Studio 5

This can be used to change the color of any layer from one color to another, but I use it to change my blue pencil lines to black. Normally I tighten up my pencils a lot more, but for this demo I used a quick sketch I did. This technique also allows you to be more open and free, as you’re converting your pencils to “inks”. I draw using the Blue Pencil tool from Freden. Get his pencil and brush sets, they are SO WORTH THE MONEY. I think normally ink over these blue lines. I prefer the blue lines as it find it easier to see when it come to inking. But inking also eats up a lot of time, so I wanted a method to skip the inking if I so desired. And here it is:

First, you have your drawing layer select.

Second, change your drawing color to black. Then select “Edit” and then select “Change color to of line to drawing”.

And BAM! Your drawing is now black. If you tightened up your lines enough, you can easily bucket fill to add the color to your drawing. I think color and shade as I normally would. For my comic style, this works our well and saves me a LOT of time. Experiment and see what you come up with.

  1. There’s a lot to comment on in this podcast, but what I want to know is how Byron converted his pencils to ink lines in Manga Studio? That might come in handy!

    • Another instant request! Bam! Look at the post above and show you my quick technique for making my pencil lines black.

      • This is great, Byron! Thanks very much! I’ll try this out tonight. I’m usually pretty loose with my pencils, but this might force me to tighten them up a little bit.
        Thanks for the mini-tutorial 🙂

      • Ah…Darn it! I have the standard version of Manga Studio 5, which doesn’t include this feature. Manga Studio 5 also doesn’t allow for negative leading in the text option, which makes it almost useless for webcomic use. I have to letter my comics in photoshop, which is fine, but it would be nice to be able to do the entire comic in Manga Studio.

  2. Is there a cance that there will be a Manga Studio vodcast ? I have by Manga Studio ex5 today. It is a fantastic programm ( I had manga studio 5 bevor ) but you must know how to use it . I have the impression that the programm can savs you a hell of a time , but only if you do it right .
So please , a video podcast would be very helpfull .
    Thanks .
