In this podcast, we chat about listener Walter Ostie’s question.

“Now that indie comics are gaining ground in the market, the rise of the indie publisher is inevitable. Me and my friends have been contacted by indie publishers and I see many creators I respect working with indie publishers. Image is mostly focused on big names and it is harder for unknowns to be picked up by Image. I think the indie publisher has a lot to offer creators, but I think there are a lot of risks and growing pains. The creator really needs to pay attention to the publishers track record, potential services, marketing, costs, and termination. I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject.”

We chat about this for nearly 90 minutes! I will also apologize in advance, I was having an off-night with my depression and was not as focused as I should be.

  2. Thanks for chatting about that subject. It really helped to get the internal debate out of my head. Also it is pronounced ‘ahst-lee’, but even my wedding officiant got it wrong, so don’t feel bad. And I do go by Wally, Walt or Walter 😉

    • Thank YOU for the great topic! It gave us a lot to think about. It’s definitely not a cut-and-dry question, and I think everyone has to come to their own conclusion about the way to take their work, brand, and even company.

      Out of curiosity, what are you thinking for your own direction, having now debated it?

      • It’s almost too much to think about right now trying to get the book together and finish up a freelance gig. However I am leaning towards just staying self contained. One of the bigger companies doesn’t offer much except distribution through diamond (which is pretty big). The two smaller/newer ones seem like they are going to go the extra mile, I just dont know enough about their abilities to give them my baby, as it were. They aren’t asking for much commitment on my part, so I am not really risking too much. It is just hard to let someone represent my name/brand when they don’t have much of a track record.

        • True. Although I guess the middle road would be: look over the contract and try it out for a year? As long as you make sure that any contract you sign lets you 1) Keep your intellectual property rights and 2) Leave if you want to, 3) Keep freedom of self-representation, you might be able to go with a company for a limited time. You could re-assess at the end of that period if they brought much that you didn’t bring yourself.

          Or stay as a solo, self-managed brand. The internet is great these days on connecting people with readership! Depends on if you want to go direct connection, or think your work is the kind that would perform well in a general populace…although, if it IS, then you could still do a general connection on your own…

          I really don’t think there’s a BAD answer to this question, though…well, except “sign a bad contract and lose the things that actually matter.” THAT would be a bad answer. XP

          • I think once I have the book off to the printers, I will be able to reevaluate the possibility. All the contracts have been fair and don’t involve any ownership exchanges. Going with any of them, won’t decrease my personal connection, but will help to increase my readership…hopefully. But I am interested in learning it myself as well.
